Strong Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Türkiye


(MENAFN) Türkiye experienced a powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake late on Sunday, shaking the nation significantly.

According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency, the epicenter of the quake was located in the Sindirgi district of Balikesir province, situated in the western part of Türkiye.

The seismic event occurred at a depth of 11 kilometers (6.8 miles), intensifying its impact on the region.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported that an 81-year-old individual lost their life after being rescued from the rubble of a collapsed building.

Additionally, twenty-nine others who sustained injuries have been saved, with none facing critical or life-threatening conditions.

Preliminary assessments suggest that the earthquake and subsequent aftershocks have caused the collapse of 16 buildings across 68 neighborhoods.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his sympathies to everyone affected by the disaster and assured that he will closely monitor the situation moving forward.
