Jordan’s Cassation Court confirms imprisonment for three years for drug trafficking
(MENAFN) The Court of Cassation has upheld a verdict from June 2022 by the State Security Court (SSC), affirming a sentence of more than three years in prison for a drug dealer convicted of possessing illegal narcotics in early 2022.
The accused was found guilty of acquiring illegal drugs with the intention to sell them to an undercover agent on February 22. Initially, the SSC sentenced him to five years imprisonment and imposed a JD5,000 fine for drug possession charges.
However, the court reduced the fine to JD3,500 and shortened the prison sentence to three years and four months, offering the defendant a chance to reform.
Court records reveal that the Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) had received information about the suspect’s possession of narcotics and assigned an agent to pose as a buyer. According to the documents, “The AND agent got in touch with the defendant and asked him for Captagon pills in return for JD30.” Upon meeting, the agents immediately arrested the suspect and found various illegal substances on him.
The defendant challenged the SSC ruling through his lawyer, who claimed the confession was made under “duress” and denied the charges.
Meanwhile, the SSC prosecution urged the higher court to maintain both the sentence and the fine.
The Court of Cassation confirmed that the SSC followed appropriate legal procedures and noted, “It was clear to the court that the defendant confessed willingly to possessing the illegal drugs to sell in the local market.”
Judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Majid Azab, Hayel Amr, Mohammad Shreiri, and Ibrahim Abu Shamma presided over the case at the Court of Cassation.
