Beijing’s Authorities issue red alert due to heavy rains

(MENAFN) Authorities in Beijing have raised the city’s rainstorm alert to the highest level following a week of relentless rainfall that has caused widespread disruption.

At 1 p.m. on Monday, the capital's meteorological agency issued a red alert—the top tier in China’s four-level warning system—forecasting intense rainfall across the city from midday through Tuesday morning.

According to forecasts, most areas of Beijing are expected to receive over 100 millimeters of rain within six hours, with certain districts likely to be hit with more than 200 millimeters.

The city’s water authority, in coordination with meteorological officials, also released flood warnings. Miyun District was identified as particularly vulnerable, while Fangshan, Mentougou, and Huairou districts were also flagged as high-risk zones.

Multiple districts—including Shijingshan, Fengtai, Huairou, Fangshan, and Mentougou—have activated their own red alerts, especially as mountainous regions face elevated threats of flash floods, landslides, and mudslides.

Residents have been advised to take precautions by staying indoors during thunderstorms, avoiding travel on waterlogged roads, and steering clear of rivers and mountainous areas.
