Washington to impose sanctions on Russia if no deal is reached with Ukraine
(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that new sanctions will be imposed on Russia if it does not reach a resolution with Ukraine within the next ten days, according to statements made on Tuesday. The previous deadline was set to expire in early September, but Trump announced a shortened timeline during a recent visit to the United Kingdom.
While speaking with reporters on his return trip, Trump confirmed, “ten days from today,” as the new deadline.
“And then… we’re going to put on tariffs and stuff,” he added. The measures reportedly under consideration include 100% tariffs on Russian goods and secondary sanctions targeting other countries and businesses that continue engaging in trade with Moscow.
In response, Russian officials reiterated a willingness to engage in negotiations, though they emphasized that any diplomatic discussions must reflect on-the-ground realities and address the underlying causes of the ongoing conflict. Commenting on the U.S. president’s remarks, Kremlin officials noted that his comments were “taken into account.”
According to the Kremlin, Russia remains committed to its military objectives while simultaneously supporting the peace process, aiming to secure its interests through any potential agreement regarding the conflict in Ukraine.
Trump acknowledged on Tuesday that the effectiveness of the upcoming sanctions is uncertain. “May or may not affect them [Russia],” he said, expressing doubt about their impact. Since taking office earlier this year, Trump has repeatedly voiced support for a swift diplomatic resolution.
However, his frustration over the lack of tangible progress has become more apparent in recent weeks. He has spoken of his “disappointment” with Moscow and increased pressure by threatening further punitive actions.
Russia, for its part, has described such threats as counterproductive and unhelpful to the peace process.
