Greece Heatwave Triggers Electricity Demand, Price Surge

(MENAFN) A relentless heat wave sweeping across Greece has driven electricity demand and wholesale prices to unprecedented heights this summer, placing immense strain on the country’s power grid, local media reported on Friday.

On July 25, power consumption hit an all-time peak, according to data from the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) cited by the daily To Vima. This surge, fueled largely by the widespread use of air conditioning units amid soaring temperatures, followed a record-breaking demand of 10,798 megawatts (MW) just the day before, on July 24 — the highest level recorded so far in 2025.

The prolonged stretch of extreme heat is severely testing Greece’s energy infrastructure, highlighting vulnerabilities in the grid as it struggles to cope with sustained, elevated load.

Meanwhile, wholesale electricity prices also escalated sharply, with the average rate on July 25 surpassing €142 ($166.5) per megawatt-hour (MWh), reaching the highest price recorded since the beginning of the summer season.
