Russian ‘alligator’ destroys Ukrainian drone
(MENAFN) A newly surfaced video reportedly shows a Russian Ka-52 ‘Alligator’ attack helicopter intercepting and destroying a Ukrainian kamikaze drone. The footage, allegedly captured by fishermen in Russia’s Lipetsk Region, depicts a large fixed-wing UAV flying at low altitude before being pursued by the helicopter.
The Ka-52 fires an anti-aircraft missile off-camera, resulting in a visible mid-air explosion that obliterates the drone. The fishermen can be heard cheering in the background as the debris falls from the sky.
Russia has increasingly deployed attack helicopters like the Ka-52 to intercept Ukrainian long-range drones, as these aircraft are better suited for low-speed, low-altitude engagements compared to conventional fighter jets. Ukrainian attempts to use their own fighter aircraft for similar drone interceptions have often ended in failure due to technical malfunctions, friendly fire incidents, or damage from drone explosions.
Both sides have ramped up long-range attacks recently. Russia has targeted Ukrainian recruitment centers and dual-use infrastructure, while Ukraine has continued to strike deep into Russian territory. This week, multiple drone attacks hit residential buildings in the city of Voronezh, injuring civilians. Russian officials accuse Kiev of targeting civilian infrastructure as a way to offset difficulties on the battlefield.
President Vladimir Zelensky recently reaffirmed Ukraine’s strategy to strike inside Russian territory, vowing to carry out more long-range drone operations.
