Fatal Stampede at India Temple Leaves Six Dead, 29 Injured

(MENAFN) At least six people lost their lives and 29 sustained injuries on Sunday during a chaotic stampede at the Mansa Devi temple located in Uttarakhand’s Haridwar district, police confirmed. The temple is situated roughly 53 kilometers south of the state capital, Dehradun.

The incident reportedly erupted after a false rumor circulated about a devotee receiving an electric shock on the stairway about 100 meters down the temple pathway. This misinformation triggered widespread panic among the gathered crowd, sparking the deadly rush, said Pramendra Singh Dobal, a senior police official.

"We are investigating the matter," he stated.

In response, authorities swiftly deployed police forces along with the State Disaster Response Force to conduct rescue and relief efforts at the scene.

Haridwar, recognized as a prominent pilgrimage site for Hindu worshippers, was crowded with a large number of devotees when the stampede occurred. Footage broadcast on television showed injured pilgrims being transported to hospitals via ambulance, while many others received medical treatment onsite.

Officials warn that the death toll could rise as the situation develops.
