China Builds World's Biggest Hydropower Plant
(MENAFN) On Wednesday, China firmly stated that the development of what is set to become the globe’s largest hydropower facility, located in the southern part of Tibet, falls “fully” under its “sovereignty.”
This declaration came in response to apprehensions expressed by neighboring nations India and Bangladesh.
Chinese Foreign Ministry representative Guo Jiakun addressed the issue, emphasizing that the large-scale infrastructure initiative will not “adversely” impact countries situated downstream.
The concerns were voiced after China initiated construction on the enormous hydropower installation in the secluded Yarlung Zangbo River canyon, positioned in southwestern Tibet.
Once finalized, the venture is projected to significantly aid in controlling and reducing natural disasters throughout the entire Yarlung Zangbo River region, according to Guo.
He also underlined that China is actively working with countries further down the river by providing essential hydrological information and engaging in efforts to manage floods and reduce associated risks.
"We have had necessary communication with them on the project, and will continue enhancing cooperation for the benefit of all people along the river basin," Guo stated, highlighting China’s intent to foster mutual understanding and benefit through ongoing dialogue.
He further noted that China approaches the management of international rivers with a "high sense of responsibility" and possesses extensive expertise in hydroelectric developments.
The planning, engineering, and execution of this newly unveiled project are being conducted in strict accordance with the "highest national industrial standards," ensuring both technical integrity and environmental consideration.
