India to resume issuing visas for Chinese nationals
(MENAFN) India has announced it will restart issuing tourist visas to Chinese nationals beginning July 24, 2025, marking a significant step toward improving relations between the two Asian powers.
The visa restrictions were initially introduced during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic and remained in place amid heightened tensions following a deadly 2020 border clash in the Himalayas, which strained diplomatic ties.
"From July 24, 2025, Chinese citizens can apply for a tourist visa to visit India," the Indian Embassy announced in a message posted on Chinese social media platform Weibo.
Beijing has repeatedly called for India to resume visa services and restart direct flights between the two countries—both of which were halted in 2020.
“Easing cross-border travel is widely beneficial,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said. “China will maintain communication and consultation with India to further facilitate travel between the two countries.”
Efforts to rebuild diplomatic ties gained momentum in October last year when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on the sidelines of the 2024 BRICS summit in Kazan. During those talks, the two leaders agreed to disengage from contested border areas and reaffirmed their intention to improve bilateral relations.
