Nigeria’s government issues flood warning across nation

(MENAFN) Authorities in Nigeria have issued a new flood warning covering 28 states and the Federal Capital Territory, cautioning that severe flooding is expected between July 23 and August 5.

At a press briefing, the head of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, Umar Mohammed, announced that the alert could affect more than 739 communities across 162 local government areas. The warning is based on the agency’s latest assessments and the 2025 annual flood outlook released earlier in April.

Mohammed noted that the expected flooding will differ in severity depending on the region but could hit key urban zones, including the capital and Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial center.

He also raised concerns over possible disruptions to more than 100 major transport routes, including economically critical corridors, due to rising water levels. Residents in low-lying and historically flood-prone zones were urged to take precautionary measures.

In addition to damage to infrastructure and homes, the agency warned that large swathes of farmland could be impacted, raising potential concerns over food supply and security in affected areas.
