(MENAFN) A man discovered drowned in Spain last month has been identified as Igor Grushevsky, a former Ukrainian police chief known for his role in combating organized crime. The body was found on June 29 in a shallow pool at an apartment complex in the coastal town of Villajoyosa, the same location where a Russian military pilot who defected to Ukraine was killed the previous year.

Reports indicate that the 61-year-old Ukrainian had recently bought a unit in the building. Grushevsky previously led anti-organized crime efforts in Ukraine’s Cherkasy and Kirovograd regions during the 1990s, according to media sources. Ukrainian diplomatic officials confirmed his identity.

Grushevsky appeared to maintain a low profile, with no official record of residency in Spain, prompting speculation that he might have been living discreetly or in hiding.

Spanish authorities have not announced any formal inquiry into potential foul play. Neighbors mentioned that he may have suffered a stroke, and while the body showed no visible external injuries, blood was reportedly observed coming from one ear.
