Iranian FM cautions Britain, France, Germany against reactivating UN sanctions

(MENAFN) Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has cautioned Britain, France, and Germany (the E3) against reactivating UN sanctions on Iran through the snapback mechanism, warning that such a move would damage the authority of the UN Security Council.

Posting on X, Araghchi argued the E3 has no “legal, political, or moral” right to invoke provisions of the 2015 nuclear agreement or UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which allow sanctions to be reimposed if Iran is found in breach of the deal.

He pointed out that after the U.S. exited the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018, Iran pursued all available dispute resolution measures before taking any retaliatory steps. Araghchi accused the E3 of neglecting their own obligations under the accord and of aligning with Washington’s “maximum pressure” campaign instead.
