Iran, E3 Nations Resume Nuclear Talks in Istanbul
(MENAFN) Iran and the three European nations of France, Germany, and Britain, collectively known as the E3, have agreed to restart their nuclear discussions this Friday in Istanbul, as reported by an Iranian state broadcaster on Sunday night.
The broadcaster confirmed, "Iran and the European troika – comprising France, Germany and Britain – will resume nuclear negotiations on Friday in Istanbul."
Earlier in the day, the broadcaster had mentioned that the four parties had tentatively agreed to resume nuclear talks next week, though specifics regarding the time and exact venue were not disclosed.
In discussions on Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and the senior diplomats from the UK, France, Germany, and the European Union underscored the urgency of returning to diplomatic efforts for securing a nuclear deal.
They also warned that, should the talks fail, they would be prepared to activate the UN’s "snapback" mechanism, which would reimpose international sanctions on Iran.
Previously, negotiations between Tehran and the US were taking place through Omani mediators, until Israel’s unexpected attack on Iran on June 13 led to a 12-day conflict.
The attack, which occurred just two days before the planned sixth round of talks in the Omani capital, Muscat, resulted in significant casualties, including high-ranking Iranian military officials, nuclear scientists, and civilians.
Following the attack, Iran accused the US of complicity, and the US subsequently carried out airstrikes on three major Iranian nuclear facilities, claiming to have destroyed them.
A ceasefire was established on June 24.
