Iran, European Powers to Resume Nuclear Talks
(MENAFN) Iran and the group of three major European countries – the UK, France, and Germany – have reached a preliminary understanding to revive nuclear discussions in the upcoming week, according to a Sunday report from an Iranian state-run outlet.
Quoting an informed insider, the broadcaster stated that both parties are aligned on restarting the dialogue; however, the exact date and venue for these talks remain undecided at this point.
During a meeting with Iran’s foreign minister last Thursday, senior officials from the UK, France, Germany, and the European Union underlined the critical need to re-engage in diplomatic efforts aimed at a nuclear agreement.
They also warned that failure to make progress could prompt them to activate the United Nations "snapback" mechanism, which would reinstate global sanctions.
Prior to the recent escalation, indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington were being facilitated by Omani intermediaries.
However, those efforts were abruptly halted following an unexpected assault by Israel on June 13, sparking a 12-day conflict.
This offensive occurred just 48 hours before the anticipated sixth round of discussions was scheduled to take place in Muscat.
In the aftermath, Iran blamed the United States for being complicit in the Israeli military operation, which resulted in the deaths of prominent Iranian military leaders, nuclear experts, and civilians.
Additionally, the US conducted airstrikes on three significant Iranian nuclear facilities, asserting that they had been “obliterated.” A ceasefire was declared on June 24.
Although both the US and its European allies maintain that Iran must never possess a nuclear weapon, Iranian officials continue to insist that their nuclear activities are solely intended for peaceful energy purposes.
