US Senate agrees to cut nine billion in federal spending
(MENAFN) The US Senate has passed a bill cutting $9 billion in previously approved federal spending, including funding for foreign aid and public broadcasting. The vote, which ended 51–48 after an all-night "vote-a-rama," reflects a Republican push to reduce federal expenditures under President Donald Trump’s leadership.
The legislation—known as a rescissions package—now returns to the House of Representatives, which had earlier approved a similar version with $9.4 billion in proposed cuts.
While some controversial cuts, such as $400 million from the PEPFAR HIV/AIDS program, were removed to gain approval, the Senate still voted to slash about $8 billion from other international aid programs, including those managed by USAID. Attempts to preserve funding for public broadcasting and global health efforts failed.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune praised the move as a step toward "fiscal sanity," despite opposition from Democrats and some moderates concerned about the humanitarian impact.
