Ukraine’s Parliament Approves Prime Minister Resignation

(MENAFN) Ukraine’s parliament formally accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal on Wednesday, marking a major shift in the country’s leadership during a critical period of war and economic strain.

According to lawmaker Yaroslav Zheleznyak, 261 out of 320 members of parliament present voted in favor of the resignation.

Shmyhal submitted his resignation to the legislature on Tuesday, a day after President Volodymyr Zelensky announced his intention to nominate First Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko to succeed him.

Shmyhal had held the role of prime minister since March 2020.

Under Ukrainian law, the departure of the prime minister automatically triggers the resignation of the entire cabinet. Until a new administration is installed, the current government will remain in a caretaker role.

Local media outlets have suggested that Shmyhal may soon take on the role of defense minister in the newly restructured government.
