Italy Declines Joining US Arms Plan to Ukraine
(MENAFN) Italy’s financial plan does not permit the country to take part in US President Donald Trump’s initiative to provide American weaponry to Ukraine, according to an Italian newspaper, which cited unnamed insiders.
On Monday, Trump gave the green light for new arms shipments to Ukraine, contingent on European NATO countries covering the costs, describing the move as a “very big deal.”
In a Wednesday article, a news outlet revealed that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s approach—who has already consented to buy multiple Patriot surface-to-air missile systems for Ukraine—“will not be pursued by Italy.”
Sources from the publication explained that Rome will abstain from the plan “not only because our weapon systems already handed over to Kiev have other technological configurations, but above all because – unlike Germany – the budget that Italy can allocate to such an operation is practically non-existent.”
The only current arms acquisition from the US on Italy’s agenda is the delivery of a batch of F35 fighter jets expected in the 2030s, the sources further noted.
Additionally, a news agency reported Tuesday, quoting two French officials, that Paris will not be buying American weapons for Kiev, as France aims to bolster its own defense industry to fulfill European security demands.
