German Chancellor Backs Trump’s Move to Supply Ukraine with Arms
(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed strong support for US President Donald Trump’s recent declaration that the United States will provide extensive weaponry to Ukraine, with European allies assuming financial responsibility.
“President Trump has taken an important initiative today: The US will provide Ukraine with weapons on a large scale if the European partners finance this,” Merz stated late Monday.
The Chancellor revealed that he and Trump have held multiple discussions about this strategy in recent days, stressing Germany’s commitment to playing a “decisive role” in this collaborative effort.
“We (Europeans) are doing this in our own interest. This will help Ukraine defend itself against Russia's bombing terror. Only in this way will the pressure on Moscow increase to finally negotiate peace,” Merz affirmed.
He added, “After all, we are showing that we, as security partners, are pulling together. Now we will quickly clarify the details. We are in contact with our partners to this end.”
During a meeting Monday in the Oval Office with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, President Trump voiced frustration over Russia’s stalling in peace negotiations related to Ukraine.
