Trump Threatens Russia with Tariffs
(MENAFN) During a meeting at the Oval Office with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, US President Donald Trump warned that the United States could enforce 100% secondary tariffs on Russia if a resolution to the ongoing war in Ukraine is not achieved within the next 50 days.
Trump expressed strong dissatisfaction with Moscow's actions, stating he was “very unhappy” with Russia and disillusioned with President Vladimir Putin.
Trump remarked, “I thought we would have had a deal two months ago, but it doesn’t seem to get there.”
He stressed that if no agreement is finalized within the 50-day period, the US would implement sweeping tariffs. “So, based on that, we’re going to be doing secondary tariffs. If we don’t have a deal in 50 days, it’s very simple – and they’ll be 100%.”
Referring to the Ukraine conflict, which began in February 2022, Trump labeled it as former President Joe “Biden’s war.”
He emphasized, “I would like to see it end. It wasn’t my war ... I’m trying to get you out of it,” underlining his desire to conclude the hostilities.
Additionally, Trump revealed that the United States plans to provide military aid to Ukraine via NATO, though the entire cost will be borne by European nations.
“We made a deal today … We are going to be sending them weapons that they are going to be paying for. The United States will not be having any payment made. We're not buying it, but we will manufacture it, and they're going to be paying for it,” he explained.
Secretary General Rutte confirmed the deal, saying: “The US has decided to indeed massively supply Ukraine with what is necessary through NATO. Europeans (are) 100% paying for that.”
