China Proposes to Help Defusing Thailand-Cambodia Border Tensions

(MENAFN) China has stepped forward to assist in defusing escalating border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, both of which are its Southeast Asian neighbors.

The diplomatic offer came on Thursday from Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during bilateral talks with Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa. Their meeting took place on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) foreign ministers summit in Kuala Lumpur.

"China is willing to uphold an objective and fair position and play a constructive role in promoting the peaceful coexistence between Thailand and Cambodia," Wang stated, according to a release from the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Friday.

Wang emphasized that both nations are longstanding friends of China. He expressed hope they would engage one another with sincerity, resolve the matter amicably through dialogue and consultation, and work together to de-escalate tensions and restore stability quickly.

The border dispute flared up on May 28, when a deadly exchange of gunfire erupted between Thai and Cambodian forces, resulting in the death of one Cambodian soldier.

In response, both governments have since sealed their shared border, further straining relations.
