Japan Hands Over Used Naval Vessels to Philippines
(MENAFN) The Philippines confirmed on Sunday that Japan will be handing over several of its pre-owned naval vessels to Manila as part of efforts to strengthen deterrence and response capabilities, according to a state-run news agency.
The Philippine Navy (PN) announced in a statement that preparations are underway for a Joint Visual Inspection (JVI) of the ships, following an official invitation from Japan’s Ministry of Defense.
Earlier reports from a Tokyo-based news agency revealed that Manila and Tokyo have reached a deal to export used Abukuma-class destroyer escorts to the Philippines.
This initiative aims to improve operational coordination between the Philippine military and Japanese forces, while reinforcing joint deterrence and response capacities amid escalating tensions with China, the report highlighted.
The Abukuma-class destroyers were initially commissioned between 1989 and 1993.
The PN also indicated that a team of naval specialists will be sent to carry out a detailed evaluation of the vessels.
"This planned inspection forms part of exploratory discussions on the possible transfer of these naval assets to the Philippines. Designed for anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare, the Abukuma-class destroyer escorts are known for their reliability and versatility, which align with the PN’s operational requirements in protecting the country’s maritime domains," the statement said.
