Abu Dhabi Beachgoers Warned Of Swimming In Prohibited Coastal Areas, Drowning Risk

Residents and visitors in Abu Dhabi have been warned against swimming in certain stretches of coastal areas , in an announcement by the Capital's police on Monday, July 30.

The authority along with the Department of Municipalities and Transport urged people to avoid swimming in prohibited coastal areas, which extend from Al Bahia Sea to the Al Shalila area.

These locations may pose a danger to public safety due to several factors such as strong water currents or the presence of underwater obstacles, in addition to the lack of rescue teams.

Clear warning signs have been placed in these areas to ensure swimming does not take place as the authority warned that swimming could lead to drowning or injury.

Parents have been urged not to leave children unattended in these areas to prevent them from swimming there. The police also emphasised the importance of providing adequate supervision and parental and family guidance to reduce the likelihood of drowning or falling incidents.

Families have also been advised to follow necessary preventive measures to protect their children and to direct them to swim only in designated areas where lifeguard stations are available.

Last year, a 15-year old Indian expat drowned after getting caught in strong water currents while swimming off Dubai's Al Mamzar beach.

Meanwhile in 2022, the body of an Emirati man who had drowned was found at the beach of one of Abu Dhabi's islands. The 31-year-old man had drowned while swimming.
