EU Under Fire for 'Double Standard' on Gaza Crisis
(MENAFN) A prominent child rights group has criticized the European Union for displaying a "double standard" on human rights, specifically for its silence amid the escalating humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, which is disproportionately affecting children. On Wednesday, Eurochild condemned the EU for its failure to take strong action and urged the European Commission to advocate for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza. The organization also called for full humanitarian access and the suspension of agreements with Israel until it adheres to international law.
Eurochild emphasized that Israel's blockade has intentionally restricted essential supplies like food, water, and medical aid, while convoys delivering assistance have come under attack. "This isn't a battle between two armies, but a campaign of violence against a starving population, where children are among the primary victims," the group said.
The organization warned that the EU's inaction not only damages its credibility on the global stage but also risks enabling further atrocities, thereby undermining the international legal framework. "These war crimes would provoke a strong international response elsewhere," it added. "The European Union has both the influence and responsibility to act decisively. Failure to act now will be devastating."
Despite mounting global demands for a ceasefire, Israel's military continues its offensive in Gaza, which has resulted in over 57,000 Palestinian deaths, the majority being women and children, since October 2023. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for their roles in war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice concerning its actions in the region.
