PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Afghan Red Crescent Society head Maulvi Shahabuddin Dilawar has called on international aid organizations to provide urgent assistance to flood victims in Afghanistan.

Dilawar, who visited central Logar province, distributed emergency aid to about 200 flood-affected families in Mohammad Agha and Azra districts.

He said many people suffered heavy financial and life losses due to flash floods triggered by heavy rains and international organizations, along with the government, should help them.

Dilawar said the Red Crescent Society had also started a survey of flood-affected families in a number of other provinces and they would be provided with relief items soon.

Logar Governor Maulvi Ziaur Rahman Madani said that recent floods played havoc in Pul-i-Alam, Mohammad Agha and Azra districts, urging international organizations to help the affected people.

Madani added that Logar's Rural Development and Reconstruction and Disaster Preparedness Directorates had provided food and non-food items to 125 flood-affected families yesterday.

Similarly, Maulvi Mohammad Hashim Hazbullah, the head of the Logar Red Crescent, said that the Afghan Red Crescent Society distributed 42 food and non-food items to 200 flood-affected families in Mohammad Agha and Azra districts on Tuesday.

According to officials, heavy rainfall unleashed floods in Pul-i-Alam, Mohammad Agha, and Azra districts this week, killing three children and injuring two others.

The floods also destroyed or collapsed 250 residential homes and about 15,000 acres of crops and orchards.
