Eight Georgian Parties Unite to Boycott October Local Vote
(MENAFN) Eight political parties in Georgia declared their decision to boycott the upcoming local elections in October, citing concerns over the legitimacy of the current government.
The parties—Freedom Square, European Georgia, United National Movement, Strategy Agmashenebeli, Akhali, Girchi - More Freedom, Droa, and the Federalists—issued a joint statement, which was shared by media. They condemned the elections as an effort to validate an unlawful regime and pledged to intensify their "resistance efforts towards eliminating the oligarchic system."
This move comes after widespread protests in May 2024, which erupted across the country following the controversial "foreign agents" law. Both the EU and US strongly criticized Georgian authorities' actions during the unrest. At the time, the ruling Georgian Dream party accused the West of backing efforts to create a revolutionary scenario in Georgia.
Opposition protests also persisted into the fall, following Georgian Dream's controversial victory in the parliamentary elections, which opposition parties denounced as fraudulent.
