Israeli Airstrike on Tehran Prison Leaves Seventy-One Dead
(MENAFN) Iran reported on Sunday that an Israeli airstrike last week on a prison in Tehran resulted in 71 fatalities and numerous injuries.
Asghar Jahangir, representing Iran’s judiciary, denounced the attack on Evin Prison as a “full-fledged crime by Zionist forces,” emphasizing that the strike also harmed civilians living near the prison’s visitation and judicial facilities, according to a news agency.
Victims of the strike included prison staff, conscripted soldiers, inmates, relatives of prisoners, and nearby civilians—some of whom lost their lives in the assault, the spokesperson stated.
This airstrike occurred last Monday and was part of a wider campaign of attacks carried out by the Israeli military targeting various sites throughout Tehran, as confirmed by Israeli officials.
The 12-day clash between Israel and Iran began on June 13 when Israel initiated air raids on Iranian military, nuclear, and civilian locations, killing a minimum of 606 people and injuring 5,332, according to data from Iran’s Health Ministry.
In response, Tehran conducted missile and drone attacks that killed at least 29 and wounded over 3,400, based on statistics provided by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
The hostilities ceased following a US-brokered ceasefire that came into effect last Tuesday, a day after the prison airstrike.
