UN warns of starvation of five million people in Yemen
(MENAFN) Three United Nations agencies have issued a warning that almost five million people in Yemen’s southern provinces are facing food insecurity, with the situation expected to worsen unless urgent action is taken. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), and UNICEF jointly stated that without immediate and sustained aid, an additional 420,000 individuals could experience severe food insecurity between September 2025 and February 2026.
This would raise the total severely food-insecure population to about 5.38 million, representing over half of the population in southern Yemen. The agencies pointed to several causes fueling the crisis, including a prolonged economic downturn, sharp devaluation of Yemen’s currency, ongoing conflict, and more frequent extreme weather events.
They emphasized the need for urgent, large-scale humanitarian assistance to prevent worsening hunger, ensure access to vital services, and support economic and livelihood opportunities for those affected.
