Minister Joshi Announces 4 GW Offshore Wind Bids Under Ambitious FY 202526 Wind Expansion Plan

(MENAFN- KNN India) Bengaluru, Jun 16 (KNN) India is preparing for a significant expansion of its wind energy programme, bolstered by a 53 percent increase in the renewable energy budget for FY 2025–26, now allocated at Rs 26,549 crore.

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, announced plans to launch offshore wind energy bids totalling 4 gigawatts (GW) in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.

Speaking at a stakeholder conference in Bengaluru on Global Wind Day 2025, Joshi underscored wind energy's critical role in achieving India's net-zero emissions target by 2070 and the goal of generating 50 percent of power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030.

He noted that India currently has the world's fourth-largest installed wind capacity and ranks third globally in renewable energy generation.

Highlighting the government's strengthened commitment to the sector, Joshi outlined a five-pronged strategy to unlock India's wind energy potential.

This includes expanding wind projects into new states like Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha; launching offshore wind tenders; integrating wind with solar and storage for round-the-clock renewable power; investing in AI-based forecasting and grid infrastructure; and incentivising domestic manufacturing across the wind supply chain.

India presently manufactures 33 models of wind turbines, ranging from 225 kW to 5.2 MW, developed by 14 companies.

These turbines, Joshi said, not only meet domestic demand but are also globally cost-competitive.

On the issue of tariffs, Joshi called for greater cost efficiency and competitiveness in domestic production, stating that current rates-such as Rs 3.90 per unit-are too high.

“We must work collectively to reduce costs,” he urged, noting the importance of affordability in scaling renewable adoption.

Two key policy documents were released at the event-the Wind Energy Roadmap and the Wind Manufacturing Roadmap-intended to serve as guiding frameworks for building a resilient and self-reliant wind ecosystem in India.
