(MENAFN) Former US President Donald Trump has initiated a broad investigation into Joe Biden’s administration, instructing the Department of Justice to look into whether unelected staff secretly controlled the government during Biden’s term. The probe will focus on Biden’s final actions in office, particularly the use of autopen signatures on official documents, including the commutation of 37 death sentences and pardons to family members and political allies, as outlined in a White House directive released Wednesday.

Trump’s order claims there are signs Biden was unable to fully exercise presidential authority, and if aides used a mechanical signature device to hide this incapacity while making major executive decisions, it would amount to an unconstitutional abuse of presidential power. The investigation aims to uncover whether Biden’s cognitive decline led staff to make key decisions without his involvement and whether there was a coordinated effort to conceal his health issues from the public. This includes potential suppression of evidence regarding his cognitive abilities and attempts to present him as fit for office.

Trump has previously accused Biden’s top aides of possible “high-level treason” if they took advantage of his alleged cognitive decline to enact policies Biden might not have approved. The Justice Department inquiry, led by Attorney General Pam Bondi and White House Counsel David Warrington, seeks to verify if all executive actions had Biden’s authorization.

Critics argue that the investigation is politically driven and lacks solid proof, while legal experts point out that autopen signatures are legally allowed and have been used by past presidents, though the Trump administration contends it has never been used to such an extent.

Concerns about Biden’s health and cognitive capacity gained public attention during his 2024 reelection campaign, as critics noted signs such as unsteady movement, memory issues, and trouble expressing thoughts. The situation escalated after a poor debate performance against Trump in June 2024, leading some Democrats to urge Biden to drop out. Biden resigned the following month.

In a recent update, Biden’s office disclosed he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, fueling claims—including by Trump—that the illness had been developing for years and was deliberately hidden by Biden’s team. Meanwhile, Senator Ron Johnson has launched a separate investigation into a potential cover-up related to Biden’s health.
