Uganda Halts Defense Ties with Germany
(MENAFN) Uganda has decided to suspend its defense collaboration with Germany following accusations that Germany’s ambassador to Uganda was allegedly associated with groups hostile to the Ugandan government.
The move came after reports suggested that the ambassador might be supporting factions working against the East African nation’s leadership.
In an official statement issued on Monday, Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) spokesperson Chris Magezi justified the suspension, citing “credible intelligence reports” as the grounds for the action.
According to the statement, the ambassador in question, Matthias Schauer, has been actively involved in "subversive activities" within the country.
Magezi’s statement further clarified that the suspension of defense cooperation would remain in place until a complete resolution of the matter regarding Schauer’s supposed involvement with "hostile pseudo political-military forces" operating in Uganda against the government.
Matthias Schauer, who has been Germany's ambassador to Uganda since 2020, has not yet publicly addressed the allegations.
On the other hand, the German government has reportedly dismissed the accusations as “absurd and without any merit.”
A spokesperson from Germany’s Foreign Ministry expressed strong disapproval of the claims, rejecting them “in the strongest terms,” according to a news agency.
