Japan Urges to Aid Students Impacted by US Visa Policy
(MENAFN) Japan’s government on Tuesday urged its universities to assist students affected by a recent US policy that prohibits Harvard University from enrolling international students through its student visa program, according to reports from local media.
This statement followed Tokyo University’s announcement the previous day that it was exploring the possibility of admitting both Japanese and foreign students currently studying at Harvard, should they be compelled to leave the United States due to the new policy, a news agency reported.
“We’d like to work with related institutions and make utmost efforts to guarantee education for young people with ambition and talent,” stated Education Minister Toshiko Abe.
Government data indicates that approximately 110 Japanese students and 150 researchers are currently studying at Harvard.
The decision made by the Trump administration entails withdrawing Harvard’s certification under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program, which effectively prevents the university from accepting international students and jeopardizes the legal status of those already in the US.
However, a US judge has issued a temporary injunction blocking the policy. The court is now assessing the legality of the administration’s action.
