Syrian Foreign Minister, UN Envoy Discuss National Security
(MENAFN) On Friday, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani convened with United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen in the capital, Damascus. Their conversation centered on promoting safety, national steadiness, and transitional justice measures, as confirmed by a statement released by the Syrian Foreign Ministry.
According to the ministry’s announcement, both parties underscored "the importance of maintaining the country's security and stability" and delved into matters related to "transitional justice, as well as enhancing cooperation between the Syrian government and the United Nations on various issues."
This dialogue comes shortly after Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa issued a formal order on May 18, establishing a new body focused on transitional justice. This institution is assigned to investigate offenses carried out by the previous administration, ensure those responsible are brought to justice, and support restitution efforts for victims.
The gathering took place amid increasing national and international demands for justice in response to the abuses perpetrated by the Assad regime during its violent suppression of the protests that erupted in March 2011.
