China Calls for U.S. to Lift "Groundless" Chip Limitations

(MENAFN) In a strong rebuke, China's Commerce Ministry on Monday called for the United States to lift its export limitations on Chinese semiconductors, specifically targeting those manufactured by Huawei, according to a media report. The ministry asserted that "the US is abusing export controls by tightening restrictions on Chinese chips based on groundless accusations."

This demand follows a declaration last Tuesday by the U.S. Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security, which stated that using Huawei's Ascend AI chips globally constitutes a breach of U.S. export regulations.

The Chinese ministry conveyed that this action significantly jeopardizes a recent agreement between the U.S. and China established during discussions in Geneva, and pressed Washington to "correct its mistakes." It further stated, “The US's actions severely undermine the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese firms, threaten the stability of global semiconductor supply chains and hinder global innovation.” The ministry issued a warning, indicating that if the U.S. persists to “harm China’s interests, China will take resolute measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.”

Last week, Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson He Yongqian criticized the U.S. announcement concerning Huawei’s Ascend AI chips, labeling it a characteristic non-market and unilateral “bullying practice” that reveals the U.S.'s “protectionist” and “unilateralist” position.
