US Announces High Tariffs on Solar Products from Southeast Asia
(MENAFN) The US Department of Commerce has announced final tariffs as high as 3,403.96 percent on solar products imported from four Southeast Asian nations, as stated in a release on Monday.
These tariffs are the result of investigations into antidumping and countervailing duties on crystalline photovoltaic cells coming from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, along with Vietnam.
The tariffs imposed on solar cell and panel imports will vary depending on the country of origin, with Cambodia facing the highest rate of 3,403.96 percent.
Thailand will be charged a tariff of 799.55 percent, Vietnam 542.64 percent and Malaysia 168.80 percent.
The Department of Commerce found that solar cells and panels from these countries were being sold in the United States at unfairly low prices, a practice known as "dumping," and that these manufacturers received unfair subsidies, negatively impacting US producers.
Specific tariffs will be applied to several major manufacturers, including Hounen Solar, Trina Solar Science & Technology, and Jinko Solar Technology.
This final ruling follows two preliminary decisions made in response to a trade lawsuit filed by US companies the previous year.
The American Alliance for Solar Manufacturing Trade Committee accused the Southeast Asian-based Chinese companies of benefiting from unfair subsidies that made American solar panels uncompetitive, as well as selling solar components at prices below market value in the United States.
