US senator hits legendary record by criticizing Trump for consecutive 25 hours

(MENAFN) Democratic Senator Cory Booker has broken the record for the longest speech in US Senate history, delivering a 25-hour, five-minute address that heavily criticized President Donald Trump’s policies. The speech, which began on Monday evening and concluded on Tuesday night, was part of Booker’s protest against the Trump administration.

Booker started his speech by declaring his intent to disrupt the Senate’s regular business “for as long as I am physically able.” During the address, he described the current moment as “grave and urgent” for America, citing the threats posed by Trump’s numerous executive actions. He condemned the president’s policies, including government spending cuts, reductions in the federal workforce, trade tariffs, shifting foreign policy, and criticism of NATO. He also targeted Trump’s stance on Russia and controversial proposals like annexing Greenland and Canada.

The senator framed his speech as a call to action for Democrats, who at the time held no majority in either chamber of Congress and were largely excluded from legislative power. Booker repeatedly urged both the Senate and the American public to resist the president’s actions, emphasizing the severity of the situation for American democracy.

Booker, who previously served as the mayor of Newark and ran unsuccessfully for president in 2020, stated that he had fasted for several days and abstained from fluids the night before his speech to prepare. The previous record for the longest Senate speech was set by Strom Thurmond in 1957, when he spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes in an attempt to block the Civil Rights Act.

Booker, who is one of five Black senators currently serving, expressed his motivation to surpass Thurmond’s record, stating that it “really irked” him that the record had been set by someone trying to prevent people like him from being in the Senate.
