Thousands across US demonstrate Trump policies
(MENAFN) Large-scale protests against President Trump occurred in numerous cities across the United States on Saturday, marking the largest countrywide display of opposition since he assumed office in January.
The organizers of the "Hands Off" protests sought to orchestrate rallies across 1,200 sites in all 50 states. Large crowds turned out for demonstrations in major cities including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Washington, D.C.
Demonstrators expressed their discontent with various aspects of President Trump's agenda, encompassing both social and economic concerns. These gatherings took place shortly after President Trump announced that the US would levy import tariffs on most nations globally. Demonstrations also extended beyond the US, with protests held in cities like London, Paris, and Berlin.
In Boston, a number of demonstrators expressed that their actions were driven by immigration raids targeting university students in the United States, which have resulted in arrests and deportation actions.
Katie Smith, a law student, stated in an interview with a news agency that her inspiration came from the case of Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish international student. Ozturk's arrest by masked US agents near Tufts University in the Boston area was recorded on video the previous month.
Smith stated, "You can stand up today or you can be taken later," and further noted, "I'm not usually a protest girlie."
