US State Department Announces Certain Changes in USAID

(MENAFN) The US State Department officially informed Congress about its plan to restructure the US Agency for International Development (USAID), Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed on Friday.

The Department will shift particular responsibilities to the agency while ending others that don't match the priorities of the Trump government.

“Foreign assistance done right can advance our national interests, protect our borders, and strengthen our partnerships with key allies. Unfortunately, USAID strayed from its original mission long ago. As a result, the gains were too few and the costs were too high,” Rubio expressed in a statement.

“Thanks to President Trump, this misguided and fiscally irresponsible era is now over,” he continued.

Rubio stressed that US foreign aid initiatives will now be focused on directly benefiting the country and its residents.

“We are continuing essential lifesaving programs and making strategic investments that strengthen our partners and our own country. This is yet another promise made and delivered to the American people,” he added.

The proposed restructuring, scheduled to be completed by July 1, will involve the integration of USAID's operations into the State Department, with the cessation of remaining activities considered misaligned with the administration's objectives.
