ChatGPT Gets Listed as Most Popular AI tool in January

(MENAFN) OpenAI's ChatGPT, the AI chatbot developed by the American company, was the top popular artificial intelligence tool in January, attracting 4.7 billion monthly visits, based on the AITools website.

However, despite its continued success, ChatGPT experienced a fall in user traffic with the introduction of China’s DeepSeek.

Despite this, ChatGPT maintained its position as the top-ranked tool on the AITools list, which includes both generative AI platforms as well as other AI-powered tools.

In second place was Canva, an online graphic design application, with 887 million visits every month. Google Translate followed closely with 595 million monthly users.

The launch of DeepSeek in China, however, significantly affected the usage of US-based AI chatbots and had an impact on the US stock market.

This was due to the release of DeepSeek’s R1 reasoning model, which is a direct competitor to ChatGPT's premium offering and was made available with fully open-source code for free.

DeepSeek’s monthly user base surged by over 2,000 percent, reaching 268 million in January, marking the highest increase in monthly visitors among AI tools. At the same time, ChatGPT’s user count dropped by 2 percent.

CharacterAI ranked fifth with 226 million users, followed by JanitorAI with 200 million. Perplexity had 133 million users, while Google’s Gemini recorded 118 million monthly visits.
