Gen. Al-Burhan Declares Khartoum Free Of Rebel Forces
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
KHARTOUM, March 26 (KUNA) -- Chairman of Sudan's Transitional Sovereignty Council Gen. Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan arrived at the presidential palace in Khartoum on Wednesday evening and declared the capital city free for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
His private plane landed at Khartoum International Airport for the first time in two years and then he inspected the regular troops before heading to the presidential palace where he addressed a group of his supporters.
The RSF gunmen fled the State of Khartoum westward earlier today in an apparent collapse in the face of the advancing regular forces.
As the largescale ground military offensive proved successful, thousands of residents in Khartoum took to street to cheer the triumphant forces in the districts of Al-Sahafa, Al-Kalakleh and Al-Jarif.
The RSF took control of Khartoum airport, the presidential palace and the rest of the capital city in the early days of the conflict in April 2023.
On March 21, the Sudanese Army recaptured the palace but fighting continued in other parts of the city over the past days.
Over the past two years, the conflict left thousands of deaths and displaced nearly 14 million people, according to local and UN estimates. (end)
