Raging wildfire devastates Okayama, Japan

(MENAFN) A massive wildfire has engulfed over 500 hectares of land in Okayama Prefecture, western Japan, marking the largest forest fire ever recorded in the region, authorities confirmed Wednesday.

The blaze, which ignited on March 23rd, has relentlessly spread across mountainous terrain, impacting both Okayama City's Minami Ward and Tamano City, exceeding previous wildfire records for the prefecture.

Despite the destruction of six buildings, including homes and warehouses, officials have reported no injuries thus far.

As night descended, emergency services reported persistent smoke emanating from 30 to 40 distinct locations within the affected area, indicating the fire's continued intensity.

In response to the escalating situation, Okayama City and Tamano City have issued mandatory evacuation orders for numerous residential districts situated near the active fire zone, prioritizing public safety.

Firefighters are engaged in round-the-clock operations, battling the flames to prevent further encroachment on residential areas, as the wildfire continues to burn unchecked.

The origin of the fire remains under active investigation, with authorities closely monitoring the situation as containment efforts intensify.
