Serious Corruption Investigation in Istanbul Targets Mayor

(MENAFN) A significant corruption investigation has taken a dramatic twist, with Ekrem Imamoglu, the Mayor of Istanbul, as well as 99 other individuals, are now encountering serious allegations.

These accusations include bribery, fraud, involvement in organized crime, and charges linked to terrorism.

The current probe, led by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, has unveiled disturbing details about how municipal tenders, personal data, and public assets were allegedly manipulated for financial benefits.

The investigation sheds light on possible misconduct within the municipality, raising serious concerns about abuse of power.

Imamoglu, who has held the position of mayor since 2019, was arrested on Sunday in connection with a large-scale investigation into corruption and terrorism.

His detention has caused a stir in both political and business circles across Turkey.

Imamoglu was taken into custody on Wednesday by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, marking a significant development in the investigation that has already implicated numerous municipal officials and businessmen.

The investigation has led to the detention of 84 people, along with prominent figures in the municipality.

This came amid a broader inquiry that involves a total of 99 suspects. A dedicated team of 30 prosecutors is handling the corruption-related aspects of the case, whereas 4 prosecutors are focusing specifically on the terrorism charges.
