Seoul High Court clear opposition leader of election law violation
(MENAFN) In a reversal of a lower court ruling, the Seoul High Court acquitted Lee Jae-myung, the leader of South Korea's main liberal opposition Democratic Party, of charges related to disseminating false information during the 2022 presidential election campaign.
The appellate court overturned Lee's previous conviction, stating that he did not make false statements while campaigning for the presidency last year. This decision nullifies the one-year suspended prison sentence handed down by the Seoul Central District Court in November 2022.
Prosecutors had demanded a two-year prison term for Lee in both the initial trial and the appeal, accusing him of violating election laws by spreading misleading information. However, the High Court's ruling clears Lee of any wrongdoing in this high-profile case.
