Russia Opposes Control Transfer of Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant
(MENAFN) On Tuesday, Russia firmly opposed the transfer of control over the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) to Ukraine or any other nation, declaring it "impossible."
During a phone call the previous Wednesday, United States Leader Donald Trump and Ukrainian Leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy talked about energy supplies to Ukraine and the country’s nuclear power plants.
Trump informed Zelenskyy that the United States could play a “very helpful” role in managing the plants, leveraging its expertise in electricity and utilities, and suggested that "American ownership of those plants could be the best protection for that infrastructure," based on a White House statement.
Zelenskyy later informed reporters that while the restoration of the ZNPP was a topic of discussion, the issue of ownership was not addressed. He confirmed that Ukraine is open to discussions regarding the modernization of the plant.
The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement emphasizing that the plant is a “Russian nuclear facility.” It further declared that the transfer of control to Ukraine or any other country was “impossible.”
The statement also highlighted that all employees at the station are Russian citizens, stating, “Their lives cannot be played with, especially considering the atrocities that Ukrainians have committed and continue to commit on the territory of our country.”
