Kremlin describes EU policy on Ukraine war as ‘paradoxical’

(MENAFN) Western nations are taking an illogical approach to the Ukraine conflict by prioritizing military escalation over diplomatic solutions, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has argued.

Speaking to Russia 1 TV journalist Pavel Zarubin on Sunday, Peskov criticized European leaders for ignoring the root causes of the crisis while discussing the potential deployment of NATO forces in Ukraine.

“This reckless militarization of Europe—there’s no other way to describe it—is difficult to understand,” he stated.

At the same time, Peskov noted that the European Union faces new challenges with the return of U.S. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly insisted that EU nations take greater financial responsibility for their own defense.

“There’s a new sheriff in town,” Peskov said, referring to Trump. “So now they are being forced out of their comfort zone—and they are reacting aggressively, embracing a militarist stance. We hear [French President Emmanuel] Macron talking about a nuclear umbrella for Europe, which is extremely concerning.”

His remarks follow recent statements from the UK and France, suggesting that Western peacekeepers could be sent to Ukraine once a ceasefire is established. Moscow has firmly rejected the proposal, warning that NATO troops, regardless of their stated purpose, would be seen as direct participants in the conflict.

Earlier this month, Macron hinted that France could consider using its nuclear arsenal to shield its European allies and urged the EU to increase military spending, calling Russia a “threat.”

However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly dismissed claims that Moscow intends to attack NATO, calling such speculation “nonsense” and reaffirming that Russia has no interest in engaging in conflict with the alliance.
