FSB declares Russian official detained over leaking intel to Kiev
(MENAFN) Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has detained a government employee on suspicion of passing classified intelligence to Ukraine, the agency announced on Monday.
According to the FSB, the suspect worked in the central office of a state agency overseeing government operations. Last year, he allegedly contacted Ukrainian authorities and offered sensitive information regarding the security of industrial and energy facilities in Russia’s border regions, as well as details on troop movements.
If convicted of treason, the suspect could face a life sentence.
The arrest comes as the US-brokered partial ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine remains fragile. Both sides had agreed to halt attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure as part of ongoing negotiations in Saudi Arabia aimed at securing a broader truce.
However, Moscow has accused Kiev of violating the agreement by targeting Russian energy facilities, including a kamikaze drone strike on an oil transfer station in Krasnodar Region and the destruction of a gas metering station in Kursk Region.
Despite the alleged breaches, Russia has maintained its commitment to the ceasefire but warned that continued violations by Ukraine could lead to its withdrawal from the agreement.
