Kiev assaults globally-powered oil pipeline in Russia
(MENAFN) Russia has accused Ukraine of attempting to attack an oil pumping station operated by an international consortium, claiming that an armed Ukrainian drone was intercepted near the facility.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the drone was shot down early Monday, approximately 7 kilometers from the Kropotkinskaya station, which is part of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC). The ministry alleged that the facility was the intended target, referencing a similar attack in mid-February.
The CPC, which transports Kazakh oil through Russian territory, has major US companies such as Chevron and ExxonMobil among its stakeholders. Moscow condemned the incident as a violation of a US-mediated partial ceasefire, under which both Russia and Ukraine had agreed to avoid targeting energy infrastructure.
The ceasefire, brokered as part of broader efforts toward a potential truce, is being discussed in indirect negotiations in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with the US mediating between the two sides. However, Russia claims Ukraine continues to carry out attacks on energy facilities, including those with international ownership.
Last week, Russian authorities accused Kiev of launching a kamikaze drone strike on an oil transfer station in Russia’s Krasnodar Region, which also services the CPC pipeline. The attack occurred shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump agreed to the ceasefire—a deal that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky had publicly supported.
Days later, Moscow reported that Ukrainian forces had destroyed a border gas metering station in Russia’s Kursk Region. Kiev, however, blamed the explosion on Russian actions. The Russian military claimed that Ukrainian troops deliberately sabotaged the facility before retreating after a prolonged incursion.
Despite what Moscow has described as repeated provocations, the Russian Defense Ministry stated that it intends to uphold the ceasefire. However, the Foreign Ministry warned that Russia could withdraw from the agreement if Ukraine continues to violate its terms.
