Israeli diplomat proposes ‘killing off’ teen kids in Gaza

(MENAFN) A leaked audio recording allegedly captures Israel’s ambassador to Austria, David Roet, stating that Palestinian teenagers in Gaza should be killed if they are armed, sparking outrage on social media.

The two-minute recording, dated March 20, appears to be from a private meeting between Roet and members of the Jewish community in Innsbruck, Austria. In the clip, the envoy dismisses reports of civilian casualties in Gaza, insisting:

“If you believe Israel is deliberately targeting babies, that is not correct.”

He then argues that “there are no uninvolved in Gaza”, suggesting that anyone holding a weapon – even a 16- or 17-year-old – should face execution.

“There should be a death sentence… In war, if you hold a gun, even if you are a 16-year-old… [or] a child, a 17-year-old, [who] holds a grenade.”

Roet also warns that if the EU funds the rebuilding of Gaza, Israel would likely destroy it again.

The activist who secretly recorded the meeting later condemned Roet’s remarks, stating:

“I felt sickened by how calmly Mr. Roet made these statements. No one objected when he suggested executing children.”

Roet has not yet commented on the leaked recording.

The controversy comes amid escalating violence in Gaza after a January ceasefire collapsed earlier this month. On Tuesday, Israel resumed airstrikes, accusing Hamas of sabotaging peace efforts.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office defended the renewed attacks, stating:

“Hamas has refused to release hostages and rejected all proposals. Israel will now intensify its military actions.”

The war, which began after Hamas’s October 7 attack, has caused massive destruction in Gaza. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 50,000 Palestinians have been killed, while Israeli officials report over 1,700 Israeli casualties. The UN estimates that more than 13,000 children have died in Gaza, with thousands more injured.
