EU nation cautions US-bound trans travelers

(MENAFN) Finland, Denmark, and Germany have issued travel advisories for transgender and nonbinary individuals heading to the United States, following President Donald Trump’s policy changes that legally recognize only two sexes.

Since taking office, Trump has signed multiple executive orders redefining sex as strictly male or female based on biological traits. The US Health Department has been directed to enforce this classification across federal agencies.

The Danish Foreign Ministry updated its travel guidance on Thursday, advising transgender travelers to contact the US embassy in Copenhagen before their trip. “If your passport has the gender designation X or you have changed gender, it is recommended to contact the US embassy prior to travel for guidance on how to proceed,” the ministry’s website states.

Finland issued a similar advisory last week, noting that US visa and ESTA applications require selecting either “male” or “female.” Although the advisory does not directly reference Trump’s policy, it emphasizes that the US does not recognize nonbinary gender markers.

Germany’s Federal Foreign Office also updated its travel guidelines, warning that individuals with an X gender marker or a gender identity different from their birth sex should consult American authorities about entry requirements before traveling.

The warnings come after the US State Department suspended a policy that previously allowed trans, nonbinary, and intersex individuals to update their passport sex designation. Under the previous rules, passport holders could self-select their gender, including an X option for unspecified gender identity.

Under former US President Joe Biden’s administration, the US had moved toward more inclusive gender policies, such as replacing “mother” and “father” with “parent one” and “parent two” on official documents and expanding transgender rights and DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) initiatives. In 2023, Vermont’s health department even recommended using gender-neutral terms like “child” instead of “son” or “daughter.”

Since returning to office, Trump has reversed many of these policies, including banning federal support for medical procedures related to gender transitions for minors. He has also signed executive orders prohibiting “radical gender ideology” in the military and barring trans women from competing in female sports. There are also discussions about preventing transgender athletes from participating in US-hosted events, including the 2028 Olympics and World Cup.
