FuriosaAI Turns Down Meta’s USD800 Million Acquisition Offer
(MENAFN) South Korean chip startup FuriosaAI has turned down an USD800 million acquisition proposal from US tech titan Meta, according to a report released on Monday. Instead of selling, the company has decided to grow independently.
Meta had been in discussions to buy FuriosaAI, a Seoul firm, since the beginning of this year.
The US firm has shown interest in acquiring a select few Asian companies, such as FuriosaAI.
The startup, led by June Paik, a former engineer at Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co., specializes in creating semiconductors for artificial intelligence (AI) inferencing and related services.
Meta has been making substantial investments in AI infrastructure to stay competitive against major players like OpenAI, Google, and emerging companies such as China’s DeepSeek.
In mid-January, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed plans to invest up to USD65 billion in 2025, which includes funding for a large data center and recruiting AI talent. After a week, he indicated that the company might eventually invest hundreds of billions of dollars into AI infrastructure.
FuriosaAI, which employs around 150 people, including 15 at its Silicon Valley office, is currently providing sample chips to clients such as Saudi Aramco and LG AI Research, the AI division of South Korea’s LG Group.
