Global concerns over NOAA cuts affecting weather prediction in India

(MENAFN) The recent budget cuts to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) by the Trump administration have raised significant concerns in India, where scientists worry about a detrimental impact on the nation’s weather monitoring capabilities.

Climate scientist Roxy Mathew Koll cautioned, “Without NOAA’s continued support, gaps in data could emerge, reducing forecast accuracy and the ability to track the rapid oceanic changes that often precede extreme weather,” Earth scientist Raghu Murtugudde added, “Inaccurate forecasts can lead to poor decisions, ineffective planning and significant losses.”

By the end of February, NOAA dismissed around 880 employees, which threatens the operations of the primary US agency responsible for climate and weather forecasting. This agency plays a crucial role in providing essential data that enables countries like India to effectively respond to weather changes.

Given India's limited satellite coverage beyond the Indian Ocean, NOAA’s data is crucial for tracking cyclones, forecasting monsoons, and monitoring extreme weather events.

Experts caution that diminished support from NOAA could not only impair India's prediction capabilities but also jeopardize worldwide weather forecasting. This could lead to severe consequences for disaster preparedness, climate response efforts.
